Travel sickness results when conflicting messages are sent to the brain. An example of this is being below deck in a moving boat, or reading a book in a moving vehicle. While the inner ears and skin receptors detect the travel, the eyes dont register it. This conflicting information may cause the usual travel sickness symptoms of dizziness, nausea and vomiting.Travel sickness is more easily prevented than treated, as it is impossible for oral medication to be absorbed in the presence of vomiting.Treatment of Travel Sickness There are 3 groups of products used to treat travel sickness1) antihistamines such as dimenhydrinate 2) anticholinergics such as hyoscine hydrobromide 3) ginger preparations1) Travacalm Original(Contains dimenhydrinate 50 mg, hyoscine hydrobromide 0.2 mg and caffeine 20mg) Travacalm Original is a unique product to treat travel sickness because it contains a combination of dimenhydrinate, hyoscine hydrobromide and caffeine. Dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine that has an anti-vomiting effect. Hyoscine hydrobromide is an anticholinergic drug. Anticholinergics have a wide variety of actions and are well known for their use in the prevention of travel sickness. Dimenhydrinate is longer acting than hyoscine hydrobromide. Both of these ingredients may cause drowsiness. The addition of caffeine helps to counteract the drowsiness.Travacalm Original is ideal for travel of longer duration and can used in children over the age of eight. 2) Travacalm H.O.(Contains hyoscine hydrobromide 0.3 mg) Travacalm H.O. contains hyoscine hydrobromide only. It is not as long acting as dimenhydrinate and has no caffeine. Therefore, it is ideal for shorter trips, for those who do not want to take a product with caffeine and when drowsiness is desirable.Travacalm H.O. is ideal for travel of shorter duration (less than 6 hours) and can used in children over the age of eight. 3) Travacalm Natural(Contains ginger 500mg) Travacalm Natural contains ginger (zingiber officinale), a traditional natural treatment for nausea and vomiting. The oils that ginger contains appear to relax the intestinal tract in addition to mildly depressing the central nervous system. Recent clinical studies confirm the effectiveness of ginger in the prevention of travel sickness and the relief of nausea (including morning sickness. Travacalm Natural does not cause drowsiness. The Royal Womens Hospital in Sydney, NSW approve the use of ginger in pregnancy and recommend that the dosage for pregnant women should not exceed 1000 mg or 1 gram per day. Travacalm Natural is ideal for those who prefer natural treatments. It can be used in children over the age of 2, but professional advice is recommended for children between the ages of 2 and 6.
